Acid water refers to the problems associated with water supplies that have a low pH (less than 7). Acid water can cause corrosion of metal pipes and fittings, including copper pipe. Conversely Alkaline water has a pH greater than 7 and can cause lime scaling problems. The guideline value for pH is based on the need to control corrosion (low pH) and lime scaling (high pH) and should be in the range 6.5 – 8.5. Water supplies with a pH higher than 9.5 have a bitter taste and can cause skin irritation.
